Litigating Sexual Harassment and Sexual Assault Cases in Civil Court

With the passing of California Assembly Bill 218, the statute of limitations is extended for childhood sexual assault claims. Victims of sex abuse can file a lawsuit and seek damages regardless of age. There is an increasing number of sex abuse claims against individuals and institutions including the Catholic Church, school districts, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, and the entertainment industry, but litigating these cases requires unique considerations.  This program will focus on how to bring a civil lawsuit on behalf of men, women, and children who have survived sexual assault, abuse, or rape.  We will discuss how to work with the District Attorney’s office during and following the criminal prosecution of the abuser, who to file a civil lawsuit against, when to file the lawsuit, and what causes of action to consider.  This program will provide an overview of the new laws in California relating to sexual harassment and other forms of discrimination in the workplace and their effect on litigation and dispute resolution.
